Before the Video Games, There Were the Comics

The original January 2013 to September 2016 DC Comics series was written by Tom Taylor and Brian Buccellato and illustrated by various artists. It was followed by the Injustice 2 series, which ran from April 2017 to October 2018, between the release of the first video game and its sequel of the same name. The original comic series follows the Man of Steel's fall from grace after the death of his family, plus his establishment of the oppressive One Earth Regime. It includes characters like Harley Quinn that were later playable in the games, as well as Batman's fight-back "Insurgency" response to the Regime. The sequel comic series deals with the aftermath of the Insurgency's defeat of the Regime.

And How About Those Awesome Video Games?

Many of the heroes and villains mentioned above also appear in the video games. Plus, there are such notables as The Flash and Reverse-Flash, Martian Manhunter, Zod, Scorpion, Killer Croc, Solomon Grundy, Ares, Atom, Bane, Black Manta, Black Adam, Blue Beetle, Captain Cold, Cheetah, Firestorm, Poison Ivy, Red Hood, Starfire, Lobo, Swamp Thing, Sub-Zero, Doctor Fate, Enchantress, Brainiac, Atrocitus, Static, and Black Canary, as well as a number of non-playable characters you'll recognize in their cameo appearances. Those personalities include the likes of Scarecrow, Metallo, Gorilla Grodd, and Darkseid.

The Games Are Kinda Like the Comics

The storylines of the two video games are similar to those of the comics, with the 2013 original including Supes being tricked into killing his pregnant wife Lois Lane and Batman summoning League members from another universe to help him, Supergirl, and others end the Kryptonian's totalitarian Regime. The 2017 sequel gets into Batman's Insurgency's efforts to restore society after the fall of the Regime and in the face of new threats - the supervillain group "The Society" and extraterrestrial supervillain Brainiac.
